Coelho war und ist politisch tätig. Coelho wurde 1973 Mitglied der antikapitalistischen „Alternativen Gesellschaft“, die Freiheit und Selbstbestimmung propagierten und in der Schwarze Magie praktiziert wurde. Im Mai 2000 besuchte Coelho auf Einladung des Internationalen Zentrums für den Dialog zwischen den Zivilisationen (International Centre for Dialog Among Civilizations) den Iran. Im September erschien sein fünfter Roman Der Dämon und Fräulein Prym. Im selben Jahr wurde er zum Mitglied des Stiftungsrates der Schwab Foundation for Social Entrepreneurship gewählt. Er bezeichnet sich als begeisterter Fan der brasilianischen Fußballnationalmannschaft.
